Happy Earth Day!!

Earth Day is a great day to teach our children about the beautiful world we live and show them how to celebrate Earth! We're spending our day making a paper mache Earth, planting seeds in egg cartons, going on a picnic with Daddy (he took the day off) and going to see Disney's new movie, Earth! We'd love to have you join us along our journey! Take pictures of what your family is doing to celebrate, email a couple photos to me and I'll post them for the GiveThemRoots' Rooties Earth Day Celebration! If you'd like to follow our journey here's how!

Paper Mache Earth

1. Blow up a balloon and tie it closed.
2. Cut newspaper into 1" wide strips.
3. Mix one cup of flour and one cup of water in a bowl to make a "glue".
4. Dip the strips into glue. Cover the balloon with the strips in two coats.
5. Allow to dry for at least 24 hours or until dry.
6. Paint blue, allow blue to dry and then paint the Continents.

Egg Carton Garden

1. Remove the top of an egg carton. Preferrably a cardboard carton.
2. Fill each egg hole with garden soil.
3. Plant seeds according to package.
4.Place in the window sill & water carefully. Watch them grow!

I recommend planting beans with small kids. They sprout quickly, giving impatient little ones less time to wait! Another great option that you can use in the kitchen endlessly... an herb garden!

Airport Picnic
Do you have an airport nearby? Most airports offer observation decks! This is a great place to have a picnic and watch the airplanes, one of our families favorites.

1.Pack a lunch using reusable bags or containers! Let your little one help and explain why we are using reusable bags.
2.Pack Earth friendly foods, organic fruits and vegetables, organic cheese & crackers, etc.
3.Allow your child to explore the great outdoors while you have lunch. Eat a grape, run and play, eat some cheese, watch a plane.. etc. No rush! Enjoy the time together outdoors.

Disney's Earth
Disney will be planting a tree for every ticket sold during opening week of the new movie Earth. It's true! Disney's Earth will be opening on Earth Day and to help you swallow movie ticket prices, just remember your ticket will be giving back to the beautiful world you'll explore with your kids during the movie! Remember to tell your child that his or her special ticket bought a tree! Check out the trailer if you haven't seen it.

Great ideas for Earth Day. I like the fact that you are going to celebrate other people's ideas. I am exited about the new movie, Disney's Earth Movie and had fun creating a page about it.

Great ideas for Earth Day - I got to pick up my cans & plastic bottles 3 times as the wind kept blowing them over. It is recycle day for me & I am determined to recycle. Even the neighborhood kids got into the mood & helped me pick them up the 3rd time. They were getting off the bus & helped, so I explained the need to recycle. I also mailed 14 packages & used recycled boxes from the local paper supple store. They are only 10 cents a piece & no new boxes needed. The PO does not care what the boxes say. So I saved $41.00 in boxes & recycled too.
Thanks for all the recycling lessons ... they are working for me.

Thanks Brenda! Be sure to share your pictures with us as well!

myglorydays: that's a killer savings from buying recycled boxes! Way to educate the youngins about recycling too! :)

I am excited to check out the movie. It looks like a lot of footage from the Planet Earth series on Discovery HD. I really like that series! What was you guys favorite part?
