Ditch the Disposables Challenge

I hate to admit this, especially as a blogger, but I'm really bad about following other blogs. There are a few on the top of my list that I read regularly; Crunchy Domestic Goddess is one of them.

Last year Amy, the "Crunchy Domestic Goddess", challenged readers to Ditch the Disposables for 60 days (or better yet forever). I loved this challenge. It's an easy way to see how simple changes can make a big difference. Amy created a list of a few things to ditch and has encouraged her readers to pick a couple things to switch over. I'm participating again this year and would love for you to join me in the challenge!

Go to Crunchy Domestic Goddess and sign up for the challenge by leaving a comment with what you are ditching... I'd love for you to tell me too!

During this 2009 challenge our family is ditching gift bags. We have multiple birthdays in the next few weeks and we will be gifting to all of our friends in reusable shopping bags instead of normal birthday bags or wrapping paper. We plan to keep this trend alive by "wrapping" all of our Christmas presents in reusable bags or compostable wrapping paper (packing paper or newspaper) to our composting buddies. We also need to work on our paper towel consumption, especially when the boys have spills or make sticky messes! So, we're giving up paper towels and using our cloth hand towels and dish towels instead!

What can you ditch?

Which has a larger foot print on the environment, to use and dispose of paper towels or increase your energy, water and soap consumption washing and drying cloth towels?

Let's see: harvesting trees for paper, manufacturing paper towels, packaging paper towels, distributing them to stores and disposing of them, and the plastic packaging into landfills.

You have to wash towels and sheets anyways, correct? Not hard to toss in a few extra hand towels and change your cycle load from medium to large.

So- short answer: using paper towels.

What a great challenge. I will have to think of a few things to ditch. I have really cut back on the paper towels I use. Maybe one roll every three months now!
