Gripe Water: Safe or Not?

Another quick blurb from your Root Enthusiast and then I'll turn it back over to the guest bloggers again! Knowledge is power. You've heard me say it before and that's the purpose of today's post, to share some recent knowledge.

My new little man has some serious gas issues after he nurses. I've heard mothers everywhere rave about the power of Gripe Water but I've never needed it until now. While talking to a good friend a couple days ago and mentioning that I might try it, she said "Two of the ingredients in gripe water are parabens!" *warning! WARNING!* Are you seeing that flashing light too? Because, you should be.

It's true folks. Little Tummys Gripe Water by Little Remedies (sold nationwide at BabiesRus, and the ONLY gripe water at BabiesRus) contains both Propylparaben and Methylparaben! If you aren't familiar with the dangers of parabens, here's a quick run-down.

Parabens are preservatives found in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Parabens have been shown in multiple studies to have estrogenic effects, meaning they mimic the female hormone, Estrogen. This can affect fertility in both men and women. Parabens have been proven to increase the growth of tumors in the breast. They also react with the sun causing skin cells to die rapidly, called oxidative stress- something responsible for several diseases including cancer. You can find parabens in most of your everyday items; shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, sunscreen, and even in your toothpaste! That's 6 times you could be exposed to dangerous parabens before you finish getting dressed in the morning. It's even in some diaper rash ointments!!! "Estrogenic effects" and "diaper area" have no business being in a sentence together, if you ask me. Parabens are easily absorbed through the skin and digestive track, meaning the more products you use that contain these the more that is building up in your body each day.

What can you do? Check the labels. Look for paraben-free products!

Here's an alternative to Little Tummys gripe water that really IS all natural and paraben-free! Baby's Bliss Gripe Water, we purchased our's at CVS pharmacy for $12. We just started using it today and so far, we have no "gripes" about it.

Thanks for letting us know about this change! I'm glad to hear that parabens have been removed since the 2010 version.
