Homemade Valentines

Friends, siblings, parents, grandparents, neighbors, teachers... who made your child's valentine list this year? Even though the valentine list may seem endless, your budget may not. Instead of passing out traditional paper valentines with heart lollipops attached or boxes of processed sugar hearts with silly words on them, try making a homemade valentine from the heart. A valentine cookie!

This is the best sugar cookie recipe that I've ever tried. They taste just like a bakery style cookie, only better. It takes a little preparation but the soft cookie and homemade frosting will make up for your hard work. Not only that but one batch of dough will be enough to make dozens of homemade heart cookies!

Chrissy's Famous Frosted Sugar Cookies
FIRST (large) BOWL:
Cream together the following ingredients.
-1 cup white sugar
-1 cup brown sugar
-1 cup butter flavored Crisco

Add in and Mix:
-2 eggs
-1 cup buttermilk
-1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

SECOND BOWL:
-Sift 5 cups of flour
-1 tsp. salt
-1 tsp. baking soda
-2 tsp. baking powder

Gradually add the second bowl to the first bowl. It will be very hard to stir. If the dough feels sticky add more flour.

Refrigerate for at least two hours. Then preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Roll out the dough onto a well floured surface to 1/4” thickness. Cut shapes and bake for 8 minutes. *Do not butter cookie sheets! *

FROSTING
Combine the following.
1 stick of softened butter (not margarine)
3 cups powdered sugar
4 tbsp. Milk
4 drops vanilla

The frosting should be thinner than cake frosting but thicker than syrup. Adjust the sugar and milk as needed. Tint the frosting with the food coloring of your choice. Once the frosting has hardened you can stack these cookies between layers of wax paper for storage. Craft stores sell packs of small, flat paper bags, let your child draw a picture and write the name of each Valentine for a special personal touch!

Does your child's school have no homemade treat rule? You're not alone. Try this Recycled Crayon Craft for another fun, easy, and unique valentine!

Special thanks to friend, reader, and sugar cookie extraordinaire, Chrissy P. for such a delish recipe!
