Last Fall and Winter our house was crippled with colds and other odd bugs. We had just brought our brand new baby home and it wasn't 2 weeks later that my twin boys were infecting our living space with every sweet little breath they took. After a few trips to the pediatrician our boys' doctor gave us a print out with the following immune boosting smoothie recipe. I slacked off towards the end of the summer and stopped making them. Well, guess what... we all got sick. Needless to say, we've started our smoothie regime again. I hope it works the miracles it did when we were first given it.

Dr. Sear's Immune Boosting Smoothie
Drink this smoothie daily upon school entry in September, upon beginning daycare, upon exposure to a contagious illness, or when you or your child feels a cold coming on.
-2 cups milk, soy or rice beverage
-1 cup plain nonfat yogurt
-1 serving of a multinutrient supplement
-1 frozen banana, cut up
-1/2 cup frozen blueberries
-/2 cup each of your favorite fruit, frozen (e.g., organic strawberries, papaya, mango, guava, cantaloupe)
-1 tbsp. flax oil or 2 tbsp. flaxseed meal (Because fiber steadies the absorption of carbohydrates and therefore contributes to a steadier blood sugar we suggest using rich sources of fiber, such as flaxseed meal (i.e., ground flax seeds, containing both the oil and fiber), although flax oil has a more palatable consistency than flaxseed meal. For additional fiber, if you don't mind an even grainier texture, add 1 tbsp. or more of oat bran.)
-3 ounces tofu
-10 mg. zinc (if not available in your multinutrient supplement)
-1 serving soy isolate powder (optional)
-2 tbsp. peanut butter (optional)
Combine all the ingredients and blend until smooth. Serve immediately after blending while the mixture still has a bubbly milkshake-like consistency."
We've made a few changes to our recipe and I only make them 3-4 times a week. Usually every other day, unless we get the sniffles and then we bring out the big guns with daily smoothies. Our boys take their multi-vitamin at night instead of in the smoothie because we all drink them and have different vitamin supplement needs. I also use 1 cup of OJ and 1/2 cup of soy milk instead of the 2 cups of milk. We like the fruitier flavor the OJ lends, and you get a larger boost of vitamin C.
