Types of Diapers

There are 4 main types of cloth diapering systems. All-in-ones, All-in-twos, Pocket and Diaper/Cover systems. Confused yet?

All-in-one (AIO): most similar to a disposable diaper. You do not need anything additional to use an AIO system, just the diaper. Some AIO diapers now offer an opening that allows you to add extra inserts or doublers for added absorbency, like the Bumgenius (BG) 3.0 AIO diaper, shown on left.

All-in-two (AI2): this is an AIO that comes apart in two pieces, the diaper and the soaker (the inside that absorbs). AI2 can have a much shorter drying time than an AIO but has the same user-friendly features. These are near impossible to find- I couldn't even find an example for you. If someone has a brand they like please comment.

Pocket: a waterproof shell with a synthetic cloth liner to wick moisture away from baby's skin. The back of the diaper has an opening to stuff either inserts, prefolds, flats & doublers inside the diaper for absorbency. Most pocket diapers come with one insert at purchase. Ex. Fuzzi Bunz

Diapers & Covers: these consist of a diaper cover and a diaper. The diaper can be either a fitted, prefold, flat, or contour. You must have both pieces for this system to be waterproof. When using a prefold diaper with a cover you will need either diaper pins, a snappi, or a tightly fitted wrap style diaper cover to close the prefold. Ex. Chinese Prefolds

A great source for more information about diapering systems is Diaper Pin, they have listed each type of system, diaper, cover, and inserts with pros and cons. Excellent charts for comparing.
The picture (left) shows a diaper using a Snappi closure- the pin free diapering tool.

An awesome All-in-Two is Baby Softwraps. We love these diapers and I recommend them to anyone interested in Ai2s.
